My Portfolio
Pattern, Texture and Repetition
One of our first assignments was focusing on pattern, texture and repetition. The first image, was a plant outside the main foyer. I shot in P for program mode, and set the ISO low because it was a sunny day, as well as White Balance. I focused on the contrasting the textures between the rough sprouts and the smooth seeds. The contrast of color of the dark inner sprouts and the light seeds created a more interesting composition, coupled with an interesting, unexpected point of view. The second image was a wild flower in the school courtyard. I shot in P for program mode again, and focused on getting the inside of the flower as well as the lady bug in perfect focus. The contrast of the soft delicate petals and the bumpy inside of the flower created an interesting picture for the viewer to see. I got very close to the flower to ensure that it was in focus and the background was not.
Motion
For our next assignment, we shot in S for shutter priority, adjusting exposure. In this shoot, I set a slightly longer exposer to capture motion. In this picture, Erin was bouncing the ball, and she was in focus while the ball was out of focus. The difference of Erin's dark shirt and light sleeves and ball created an interesting contrast, and a sense of mood in an otherwise normal picture a girl bouncing a ball.
Aperature
For this assignment, we shot in A for Aperture, and I set the fStop low to get a shallow depth of field, and for the first image I focused on the foreground. In this case, it was the very top of the violin in focus. It was an interested and unexpected point of view that a person normally wouldn't look at a violin. The second image, I again focused on the foreground on the pins in the front of the image, the books slightly out of focus and the roses out of focus. This is compelling subject matter because while these items are in ordinary life, they are rarely together.
My Favorite Thing
For this shoot, we shot our favorite thing, which in my case was a Christmas tree. I shot in A for Aperture, setting the fStop low again and creating a shallow depth of field, focusing on the ornament in the foreground. This creates a sense of comfort, as it is an easily recognizable object and a compelling subject matter.
Studio Portraits
My favorite of the studio portraits is the one above, with Tim holding the red paddle. To achieve the lighting, I had a light angled at the side of him with a white umbrella softening the light. The result was a soft light on the right of his face, and slowly fading away on the left side of his face. I also like the picture of Kate with the flowers on her head.
Selective Desaturation
My Favorite Pet
For this assignment, I shot pictures of my dog, Buddy. My favorite image is the one on the right, of Buddy smiling. It has the best lighting and I really like the tone of the wood. The light is also well balanced in the image all the way on the left, and I chose to shoot it looking up at him to create an interesting point of view. For the middle image, I wanted to get close to him to capture the texture and coloring of his fur.
